The Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said at the Parliament today (24) that he would take appropriate action to restructure the Department of Archeology to be more efficient than it is now. He said that the previous government had not taken any progressive action to rectify this lapse.
The Minister had extended sentiments on failures of the department of Archeology caused even after long years that the war had come to an end. The department deliberately have let the people to occupy the archaeological sensitive properties.
Also the Minister pointed out the complications erupted within the institution due to the fact that there are 80% of positions at the Department of Archeology. This had caused grave hindrance to the conservation processors and other activities of the Department. Therefore, the Minister had ordered action to restructure the Department to make it more efficient. Further the Minister had directed the officials to conduct joint programs with the central cultural fund to initiate prompt conservation programs.
