According to the confirmed information of the Disaster Management center 44 students have died in the recent floods and 8 students gone missing. Ratnapura experienced the heavy floods affecting 57 schools in the region, 2 schools in Kegalle district, * schools in Galle, 4 schools in Matara district, 5 schools in Hambanthota District have been affected due to floods and landslides. Apart from that 4 schools from the Jayawardena pura zone in the western province, 15 schools in Mathugama, 39 schools in Horana and 4 schools in Homagama have been affected.
Further 30 schools in Sabaragamuwa province, 12 schools in Southern province and 17 schools in the western province have been utilized as rescue camps.
Also the Minister said that the schools are kept closed till Friday due to the prevailing whether condition and the ministry will issue a statement if there is any extension in the closure. The Ministry has taken appropriate steps to provide the students with necessities to commence schooling.
Opportunity grated to those who are affected to obtain their educational certificates for free from the department of examinations.
Alternative action to cover up the lost time due to closure of schools will be notified to public in due course.
The Minister had notified that the priority when applying disaster loans will be set to teachers and principals who are affected due to the prevailing whether condition.
The ministry has allocated the teacher training centers located at Kalutara and Rathnapura to prepare cooked meals for those who affected due to floods and landslides. The Minister had called in prospective donors for dry rations to cater the need.
