The Ceylon Teachers' Union (CTU) has expressed its delight on the Education Ministry's decision to lessen the stress on the dress code of mothers who visit the schools of their children.
Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam last week had stated that a Circular will be issued to all schools to remove all unnecessary notices that dictate what parents should wear when they come to the schools.
He had mentioned that instead of telling all mothers to wear saris, parents should be advised to come in a decent and suitable outfit when visiting the school.
General Secretary of the CTU Joseph Stalin said, "We observed several schools unnecessarily harassing the parents, especially the mothers, and telling them what to wear. They should be more aware and wear something suitable."
Ceylon Teachers' Services Union General Secretary, Mahinda Jayasinghe, stated that he appreciates the steps taken to lessen the regressive policy.
"We are happy about the Circular. However, even with its good aspects, there are several aspects that are lacking in the new Circular. We believe that the sari should not be mandatory but the parents should wear something decent."
